纽卡斯尔大学介绍

　　纽卡斯尔大学（Newcastle University），也译作新堡大学或纽卡索尔大学，是一所位于英格兰东北部泰恩河畔纽卡斯尔的一流研究型大学。该校创建于1834年，创建之初名为「医学与外科学院」(School of Medicine and Surgery)，随后成为分裂改制前的杜伦大学的另一半部的学院，在1963年根据国会法案(Act of Parliament)与杜伦大学分别成立各自独立的学校，正式全名为「泰恩河畔纽卡斯尔大学」(University of Newcastle upon Tyne)。纽卡斯尔大学是英国著名的罗素大学集团的成员，长久以来被认为是英国最好的二十所大学之一，是英国著名老牌大学之一，其历史悠久，以拥有欧洲最顶尖的医学院著称。是世界前1%的精英大学。该校无论在医学、科学及人文等方面皆相当著名，同时，该校也是英国拥有最多的欧盟研究文件的学校之一。美零留学网英国部金牌留学顾问柯嘉老师介绍说，纽卡斯尔大学目前除了泰恩河畔纽卡斯尔本校区外，在亚洲的马来西亚以及新加坡分别设立了马来西亚校区和新加坡校区教授部分专业领域课程。

　　大学宿舍及学生宿舍可容纳学生5000名，海外留学生想入住，一般都可获得分配。学校附近有很多私人房屋出租，房租比市价低，学生如需要可向学校索取名单。校园附近有多家诊所（其中一家设在校园内）。学生辅导中心及国际留学生办事处的职员对解决海外学生所遇到的困难有丰富经验，并且组织周末迎新活动帮助学生尽快适应英国的生活。大学设有完善的体育设施，包括一个18洞的高尔夫球场。

　　纽卡斯尔大学也是英国公主尤金妮（Princess Eugenie）曾就读的大学。尤金妮公主于2009年9月入读纽卡斯尔大学，刚刚年满19岁的尤金妮在英国中学高级水平考试（A-Levels)三门科目中取得了两门优秀、一门良好（AAB）的优异成绩，她也是迄今为止获得最佳A-level成绩的英国王室成员。作为英国王室的一员，尤金妮公主离开条件优越的王宫，住在一周96英镑的学生宿舍内，过上“平民”生活。但尤金妮公主并不是第一位入住学生宿舍的王室成员，她的哥哥威廉王子在圣安德鲁斯大学学习时，也曾在学校宿舍度过他的第一年大学生涯。

　　学校历史

　　纽卡斯尔大学的历史可以追溯到1834年由纽卡斯尔城成立的医学院，提供当时在学的26名学生演讲以及手术实验课程。美零留学网英国部金牌留学顾问柯嘉老师介绍说，在1851年六月，该校分裂为两所敌对的学院。主要的学院成立了纽卡斯尔医学院(Newcastle College of Medicine)，而另一个学院则成立为泰恩河畔纽卡斯尔医学与实用科学学院(Newcastle upon Tyne College of Medicine and Practical Science)。

　　在1852年，纽卡斯尔医学院正式与杜伦大学结合，并在1856年授颁布第一个“医学证照”(Licence in Medicine‘ (Lic.Med))，该校教授的证书授伦敦大学认可。两所学院后来在1857年合并，并且在1870年重新命名为杜伦医学院(Durham College of Medicine)。

　　地理位置

　　纽卡斯尔“活力之城”的美誉来自19世纪，因为那时乔治和罗伯特史蒂文森造出了蒸汽机，约瑟夫斯万改进了电灯泡， 一到周末，成千上万的游客涌入纽卡斯尔，这里的大量学生使得城市夜生活丰富多彩，纽卡斯尔也被评为“世界八大娱乐城市”之一。纽卡斯尔人又被称为乔德人（Geordies），原因可能有三：其一，1745年的雅各比特起义中，纽卡斯尔人支持乔治王；其二，对乔治王的支持使该市居民得到了乔德人（Geordies）的绰号；其三，或许是因为当地的少数民族使用乔治史蒂文森发明的安全灯。
